As a study abroad student in Aotearoa, I knew that my time here is an opportunity to explore not just the classroom, but also the breathtaking landscapes that this beautiful country has to offer. Piha Beach, with its rugged charm and iconic Lion Rock, was a destination that had been calling out to me since I arrived.
Piha Beach is a world away from the bustling city life in Auckland. Nestled on the west coast of the North Island, its untamed beauty is a stark contrast to the urban landscape I've been studying in. The drive to Piha was windy and curvy throughout the rolling hills and mountains of the west coast.
The iconic Lion Rock truly captured my imagination. Standing tall and sharp, it's a prominent feature that divides Piha's landscape. As I began my climb up lion rock, the panoramic views of the surrounding coastline unfolded before my eyes. The crashing waves against the black sands of Piha Beach created a mesmerizing view that was unlike any other.
Reaching the summit of Lion Rock, incredible 360 views unfolded before my eyes. After staring into what felt like the edge of the world with the beautiful ocean and salty winds. I knew I had to go for a swim when I returned to the beach.
It is winter in Aotearoa, and I definitely should have packed a warmer bikini. I was committed to my cold water plunge and hopped into the icy winter ocean. I only lasted around 5 minutes, but I dunked my head and swam through a couple of waves. The water temperature was probably around 13C or 55F. It was quite chilly but a great experience!
