Christmas in July

August 27, 2023

In the northern hemisphere, Christmas is often associated with the colder winter months. However, attending a mid-winter Christmas party in New Zealand was a delightful out-of-season experience for me. The idea of celebrating Christmas in July, during the Southern Hemisphere's winter season, seemed like an exciting twist on the traditional holiday festivities.

I've always associated Christmas with snowy landscapes, cozy evenings by the fireplace, and layers of warm clothing. While most of those factors were still true, it felt odd celebrating in the middle of July.

The party was hosted by my student accommodations. Our common area had been transformed into a winter wonderland! The decorations were a unique blend of traditional Christmas elements like sleds, fairy lights, and ornaments. There was an abundance of hot chocolate and other yummy treats. My friends and I took advantage of all the photo opportunities, as well as the dance floor. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to embrace the festive cheer in the midst of a New Zealand winter.
